THE PHANTOM

Project Overview:

In this project, I focused on exploring form—its definitions, interpretations, and role in conveying design ideas. Through discussions and practical exercises, I dissected the essence of form, separating it from material and time constraints to innovate and refine design concepts. By understanding form's origins and significance, I enhanced my design process and visual communication skills.

Form (FAWRM)

noun.
1: the shape and structure of something as distinguished from its material.

2: the essential nature of a thing as distinguished from its matter.

Object Analysis

Chose multiple objects to analyze from nature, museums, or structures.

Gwanghwamun

The form of the Gwanghwamun structure: simplicity, balance, and harmony with nature.

The subtle curvature of the double-roofed pavilion: elegance and grace & mimics the contours of nature such as hills and mountains.

This curvature not only enhances aesthetics but also serves a functional purpose: structural stability of the pavilion. By evenly distributing weight, it ensures durability and longevity.

Crafted by traditional carpentry techniques, the skeleton structure provides a sturdy foundation for the roofing, which is adorned with "Giwa" - baked clay roof tiles.

Dragon Statue

The form of the Dragon expresses sense of grace and grandeur

Its sinuous body twists and turns with fluidity, while its legs/wings are stretched out evoking a sense of majesty and power.

The sinuous body structure also screams dynamism.

Smith - Corona Type Writer

The Vintage typewriter exudes a timeless charm and rugged elegance with Its sleek metal frame with subtle curvatures.

The gap between the base and the slider of a typewriter adds depth and shadow to its design, playing with light and shadow, and enhances visual interest with negative space.

Speaker

The subtle curvatures of the pavilion's roofing influenced the sleek contours of the speaker box, evoking elegance akin to natural landscapes.

Speaker Placement

The gaps between the slider and the typewriter influenced the placement of the speaker boxes, imbuing the form with visual depth.

Speaker Stand

Dynamic curvature of the Dragon flowed into the stand giving it a very dynamic powerful form.

Traditional Carpentry Techniques used in crafting the pavilion’s skeleton structure inspired the sturdy yet refined design ensuring structural stability.
